Carolyn DiFiori Hopkins – Artist & Educator
Carolyn DiFiori Hopkins is a painter and mixed media artist whose work explores themes of nature, and resilience in the face of environmental change. With a deep reverence for the landscape, she immerses herself in the natural world, sketching and collecting small treasures on her walks, capturing fleeting moments that photographs cannot. Though not a plein air painter in the traditional sense, she approaches nature as a place of contemplation and self-renewal, translating those experiences into layered, atmospheric compositions.
Carolyn studied with several artists who were direct students of Hans Hofmann, inheriting his emphasis on form, space, and expressive color. Her artistic practice bridges abstraction and representation, often reflecting the beauty and uncertainty of the contemporary era. Her recent work focuses on disaster landscapes—scenes touched by fire and climate instability—serving as a record of the Anthropocene.
In addition to her personal practice, Carolyn is a dedicated educator, teaching watercolor and mixed media workshops that prioritize experimentation over perfection. She leads both in-person and online classes, including her long-running Sundays with Carolyn Painting Class and specialized workshops like The Anatomy of a Cloud and Bring It: We Will Paint It. She also mentors artists in developing their technical skills and creative voice.
Carolyn’s upcoming projects include a community-driven mixed media series that examines adaptation and survival in uncertain times which will incorporate public workshops, exhibitions, and a reflection event. She continues to find inspiration in the quiet resilience of the natural world.
